Meeting Place: Pineywoods Boardwalk Trailhead
Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and wearing boots for the full duration of the project.
Prairies with trees and other woody vegetation nearby need continuous management in order to stay open. Without management, these areas inevitably grow into forests within a few years, causing the grassland ecosystem to be lost.
Historically, Bison and Native Americans would keep these areas open through grazing and fire management, but now, due to Bison populations being significantly reduced and use of controlled burns being suppressed in many areas, it is up to us to keep these areas open in order for critical habitat for specialized species of wildlife to not be lost!
Volunteers will be lead through our prairie by Lake Livingston State Park Rangers with loppers to cut down saplings and other woody vegetation. After saplings are cut, they will either be drug into the adjacent forest where a prescribed burn will be happening soon after or will be fed through a chipper.
Due to potential hazards like numerous Honey Locust trees, which have several inch long thorns, Paper Wasp nests, Fire Ants, and tall grass that reduces visibility, this will be a project only for volunteers of 18 years of age or older.
Our supplies are limited! If possible, please bring your own pair of loppers, safety glasses, and gloves!
We look forward to getting out in the park with y'all and greatly appreciate the help!
