About the Event
Join Texas Conservation Alliance and Dallas Parks and Recreation for an Invasive Plant Removal Event!
Help protect the rich biodiversity of Crawford Memorial Park by removing invasive privet plants on Sunday, April 27th! Crawford Park is home to over 27 acres of Blackland Prairie on its southern tip. It is one of the most well-preserved prairie areas in the Dallas park system. The prairie boasts one of the highest densities of milkweed in Dallas and serves as a registered monarch waystation, supporting monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
Why is invasive plant removal important?
Invasive plants like privet threaten ecosystems by aggressively outcompeting native plants for light, water, and space. It spreads rapidly through roots and the production of hundreds of seeds, forming dense thickets that crowd out native vegetation. Additionally, few native insects feed on privet, highlighting its low ecological value within the prairie.
Please remember to wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes for protection, and bring sunscreen and a hat for sun exposure. Don’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the event! Also, if you have loppers, feel free to bring them. We will have some loppers available for those who need them.
